Orbicular Rhyolite

Orbicular Rhyolite

Rhyolite is a silica-rich, extrusive volcanic rock, outcrops of which may resemble granite. Due to their high content of silica and low iron and magnesium contents, rhyolites form highly viscous lavas in which, as they cool, a rich range of textures are formed. The ‘orbicular’ forms seen here are the result of slicing through spherical or egg-shaped structures within the rock: these are found in various minerals and rocks but their origin is not well understood.
